A Practice With Patience at Its Centre

Baan Advocate was founded on a simple conviction: that people navigating family difficulties deserve counsel that listens first and acts with their long-term interests in mind.

Our Story

How Baan Advocate Came to Be

Baan Advocate opened its doors in the lanes off Nimmana Haeminda Road with a deliberate focus on family law — not as a side practice attached to a larger firm, but as the sole focus. The name was chosen with care: baan means home in Thai, and the work of this office is always, in some sense, about protecting what home means to the people who walk in.

The founding practitioner had spent years working with families across Thailand and observed a consistent gap: couples and individuals dealing with divorce, marital agreements, or cross-border recognition questions were often passed between departments in larger firms, losing the thread of their own story along the way. Baan Advocate was a response to that.

Today the practice works with Thai nationals, foreign nationals residing in Thailand, and cross-cultural couples who need guidance that accounts for both Thai law and the international dimension of their situation. Every matter is handled directly — not delegated to junior staff.

Mission & Values

What We Stand For

Listening Before Acting

Every engagement begins with a proper conversation. We do not form a plan until we understand what the client actually needs — which is sometimes different from what they initially request.

Measured Resolution

Where adversarial proceedings can be avoided or moderated without disadvantaging our client, we pursue that course. Prolonged conflict is rarely in anyone's best interest.

Honest Counsel

Clients receive straightforward assessments of their situation, including aspects that may be difficult to hear. We do not inflate expectations or minimise complications.

Sustained Confidentiality

The details of every matter are held in strict confidence. This is not a legal formality to us — it is a commitment we take seriously in every interaction.

Our Expertise

Family Law in Thailand — What This Practice Covers

Thai family law operates under the Civil and Commercial Code and is administered through the district courts. Matters involving divorce, marital property, and parenting arrangements fall within this framework, though the practical path through each case depends on the specific facts and the degree of agreement between the parties involved.

Cross-cultural families face an additional layer of complexity: foreign marriage and divorce records do not automatically carry legal weight in Thailand. Thai authorities have their own requirements for recognising foreign documents, and these requirements have changed over the years. Baan Advocate works through this process regularly and can handle the procedural steps accurately and without unnecessary delay.

Prenuptial agreements in Thailand require specific conditions to be valid. These include that the agreement must be made before the marriage registration, that both parties must enter it voluntarily, and that the terms must not contravene Thai law or public order. Drafting and reviewing such agreements is a central part of the practice here.

The office is located in the Nimmana Haeminda area of Chiang Mai — a part of the city with a significant international community — which has shaped the practice's experience with foreign-national clients and cross-border matters. Consultations can be conducted in person or, where the client's circumstances require it, remotely by video.
